Former Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic has launched a scathing attack on current goalkeeper Andre Onana, branding him “one of the worst goalkeepers” in the club’s history.
Matic made the remarks as a response to Onana’s recent claim that United are “way better” than Lyon, a French team, in advance of their Europa League quarterfinal matchup. On Thursday, April 10, Manchester United will face Lyon in the first leg of their European tie, despite a turbulent domestic season that has left them in 13th place in the Premier League. The English team is still undefeated in Europe despite their struggles in the league. Lyon, meanwhile, sits fifth in Ligue 1.
Following Sunday’s goalless draw in the Manchester derby, Onana expressed confidence about the upcoming fixture, stating that although the match against Lyon would not be easy, he believed United were the superior side.
Matic was clearly irritated when asked to respond to Onana’s remarks. The Serbian international, who had stints with both Manchester United and Chelsea during his time in the Premier League, pulled no punches in his assessment of the Cameroonian goalkeeper.
Matic stated, “You know, I respect everyone, but to say that, you must respond.” “You must take care of what you are talking about if you are one of the worst goalkeepers in Man United history.” Matic added that had the comment come from legendary figures such as David de Gea, Peter Schmeichel, or Edwin van der Sar, it would have carried weight. But before he says anything, he needs to demonstrate that he is one of the statistically worst goalkeepers in Man United’s modern history. We will see,” he said.
Since moving to United from Inter Milan in the summer of 2023, Onana has come under fire for a number of subpar performances, and both fans and pundits are scrutinizing his form and consistency more and more. As United seeks redemption in European competition, the Europa League match against Lyon is now set against a backdrop of renewed tension within the United camp.
